Red Cross State Organization Tells of Work Done Within State Rollcall Chairman Recounts Activities of Chapters; Milford In Prominent Place The; -valuable work done by the' Red Cross in Utah and the need for more extensive membership to continue con-tinue this' program of relief and public pub-lic instruction, is shown in the annual an-nual . report, issued last week by Colonel Hamilton Gardner, state roll call chairman for the organization. A . roll call of twenty-five thousand members will be sought this year in the drive commencing November 15, and extending to November 29, according ac-cording to Reid H. Gardner of Cedar City, brother of the state rollcall chairman and district chairman for Beaver, Iron, Washington and Kane counties. Mr. , Gardner was in Milford Mil-ford the first of the week, contacting the local chapter officers and Mrs. O. R., Smith, rollcall chairman for the chapter. Milfords quota of Red Cross members is one hundred. The present membership of 15,954 is inadequate in face of the growing need for relief throughout the state. During the past year the organization organiza-tion has increased its scope of activities acti-vities to include chapters giving instruction in-struction in home hygiene and care of the sick, first aid and life saying, and emergency medical relief centers in every county in Utah, j In addition,. t,o these activities, I more than ten thousand Utahns have (received individual assistance. These i include ex-.-ervice men and their 'families, civilians in need of relief, jtiie : ii:k, the blind and those unable to 1 n i y j: .-) :-r medical supplies for home use. Through the twenty-eight Red Cross Home Hygiene instructors active ac-tive in Utah, 756 certificates were issued to persons completing the course satisfactorily. This instruction instruc-tion also included a special course in the care of the sick. Twelve counties were represented in this work, namely: Beaver, Box Elder, Carbon, Davis, Millard, Garfield, Iron, Juab, Salt Lake, Wa?atch, Washington and Weber. Five Utah chapters participated in a public health nursing program. These were located in Garfield, Juab, East Millard, Washington and West Millard counties. The nurses' visits to or in behalf of patients numbered 2G8, with 5,807 school or pre-school children inspected-by doctor or nurse. 934 were treated for one or more delects, de-lects, j The Red Cross now numbers sixty-seven sixty-seven instructors in Utah, qualified to give life saving instruction. During Dur-ing the past year 298 persons have availed themselves of this service and received certificates for the completion com-pletion of the course. The total membership in this section of the organization or-ganization now includes 1,543. The first aid course has also proven popular. 1,073 certificates have been issued to persons completing complet-ing this course. Eighteen Utah counties were represented. There are now 71 instructors qualified to give this Red Cross first aid. Of particular interest is this phase 1 of the organization's activities, was I the First Aid and Life Saving institute, insti-tute, held at Como Springs, Morgan county July 8 to 18. Thirty-five students stu-dents comprising nur.-'cs, physical , education directors, playground directors, di-rectors, scoutmasters, school teachers, teach-ers, swimming instructors, ministers ' and college students were enrolled. Twenty-two pas-ed the standard first aid course; 12 the special first j aid course; six the senior life saving I course; four the junior life saving j course; eight the standard swimming 1 course; four the advance swimming I course; 14 the standard diving ! course; and 18 the advanced life saving sav-ing course. Twenty Utah chapters of the Red Cross now have volunteer service programs. G4,5f3 garments for relief re-lief and welfare work were produced by these volunteers. These chapters are located in Carbon, Daggett, Davis, Garfield, Grand, Iron, Morgan, Salt Lake, San Juan, Sevier, Utah, -Wasatch, Weber and Millard counties coun-ties and in the following towns: Beaver, Bea-ver, Green River, Milford, Nephi and Salina. Emergency closets through which garments and sick-room supplies and equipment are supplied to those unable un-able to have them otherwise are now operating in the following counties: ! Cache, Garfield, Piute, San Juan, Summit, Uintah, Utah, Weber and ! Millard. Nephi, Salina, Springville and Tintic also have headquarters for : this valuable service. These supplies are given out through the coopera-j coopera-j tion of the medical profession. I Seventy-three schools in Utah are 1 now enrolled in the Junior Red Cross, 1 with a membership of 29,557, accord-1 accord-1 ing to the report.
