Show TRIP BENEFITS BANDDIRECTOR Granted leave of absence to permit attending the interniountain band j contests at Price last weekend, Alvin I Baker, music director in the Milford high school, made good use of the occasion, oc-casion, making the trip at his own expense and returning Sunday, en-j thused with the proportions attained t by this event and thoroughly imbued; with the possibilities for the local band, orchestra and individuals, pro-i riding; they will get in and work. Thirtyeight bands and a lbjrg-e number of orchestras and other groups, to- i gether with individuals 4000 stu-j dent musicians in all participated in this colorful event which has become almost national in its scope with! three states participating this year and more expected in coming years.; Making the trip with Mr. Baker' was Leonard Twitchell, bass vocalist,' who was given "A" or superior rat-1 ing, only fivo out of some thirty contestants con-testants achieving this top rating. Ranked thus highly among brilliant singers from all over Utah, Colorado and Nevada, Mr. Baker feels more or less compensated for his disappointment disappoint-ment at Cedar City, where Twitchell, for some reason or other, failed to ho accorded a place though fewer and loss outstanding soloists participated. participat-ed. Gifted with a fine voice and a native talent for dramatic perfor-. perfor-. mance, this young man, if he gets a few bleaks to go alongwith an ad- mirahle determination to get an edu cation in tile face of extreme difficulties, diffi-culties, is going to be heard from in the future. Clarence Rollins of Minersville achieved a "B" rating in the bass contest and the Minersville boys quartet was accorded a "C" rating, no group ranking above a "B" in this event. Mr. Baker, a former Minersville Miners-ville boy, played the accompaniment for the Minersville quartet. |
