U racket wielders Friday on the U courts This crucial series with the Cougars should pretty well determine the relative strength of the strongest college teams in Utah B. B Y U. U the defending champions annually turn tun up with witha a fighting band of net men and on several occasions have wrested the tennis crown from their ancient Utah rivals However this year the young Redskin crew has been installed as as a n slight favorite to overcome their more experienced opponents This is due mainly to the fact that the Utah team is lead b by Gordon Giles elongated veteran and Frank Mehner brilliant sophomore These boys bos are admittedly the class of the state and are expected to chalk up two singles victories Friday It makes little difference who fills the No 1 post because they are very evenly matched but Giles is expected to get the nod because of his seniority The other two singles positions will be filled by Jimmy Eakins who has been the sensation sensation sensation sensa sensa- tion of season pro practice and Otner Omer Morris both of whom are sophomores In the doubles Giles will pair with Morris and Mehner with th Eakins The remaining doubles po positions positions positions po- po have not been definitely decided de de- cidell as yet but Harold Barker Grover Rawlins and Ernie Smith seem to have the edge on the rest of the squad To fo cope with this formidable array of net talent the Cougars under their capable coach Buck Dixon have several veterans who are going to be tough to beat Although Although Although Al Al- though not much information is available from Provo it is likely that Captain Merlin Slack Paul Harmon Alfred Alter and nd Bill Dill Mangum will play singles and possibly doubles Hard hitting Fred Weimer who is known for his outstanding outstanding out out- standing doubles play will win play No 1 doubles and possibly one of or the singles Coach Dixon will complete his doubles assignments from such luminaries as Hardy Roberts Lloyd Brink Mark Boyle and Bert Jensen |
