Show TAXATION WORRIES Dr. M. H. Harris, of the Utah Taxpayers Association, was in Milford this week in the inter-; ests of the organization which, he represents. He has just lately late-ly visited counties to the south of us and also conducted ?. public pub-lic meeting in Beaver. Doctor Harris is stressing the necessity of auditing the accounts ac-counts of our tax-expending bodies. By study of these audits, aud-its, Dr. Harris says that ideas of economy can be worked out and comparisons made. One erroneous idea which he had was that the town of Mil-ford Mil-ford had had no audit of its books in recent years. Milford has an audit every two years. The last one was for the year 1927, and was published in the Beacer County News in March 1928. He also had a faulty idea, it seems, concerning the audit of the accounts of our county off i-cials. i-cials. It was pointed out to him in Beaver that a regular two-year two-year county audit had been made. The auditing company must be held to blame for the failure to furnish proper records of it. ' Doctor Harris is a man well qualified for his work. He has made a vast study of taxation economics and has a Doctor of Philosphy degree from Stanford Stan-ford in that subject. But it would oeem that the records of audits obtained by the Taxpayers As--c.'ir.lion are far from complete, just as a close check on public monies may be lacking in Utah. However, an inspection of graphs of public expenditures for each county, (which Dr. Harris carried with him, and which gave the trend of expen- ditures for each individual county coun-ty for roads, schools, etc.) showed a favorable falling off in public expenditures, while the constant improvement of roads and schools cannot be doubted. Thus, in looking after the interests in-terests of the greater taxpayers of the state, such men as Dr. Harris have also aided the lit- tie fellow, to whom a few dollars dol-lars taxation means as much as thousands to the immense corporations cor-porations of the state. |
