Show V. F. W'S. EFFORTS ARE APPRECIATED The good work done by the Veterans Veter-ans of Foreign Wars in providing funds for lunches for needy children in the schools should have more notice no-tice than just a passing "thank you." This patriotic organization, sensing. sens-ing. the need for such relief, took the lead in the work, gave entertainments entertain-ments and dances. Solicited other organizations and citizens for funds, and sueeeded in raising or having pledged enough money so that every needy child is provided with a good wholesome hot lunch every school day, children whose parents are able are allowed to purchase their lunches at cost. While the work of the Veterans in raising the money is entitled to much praise the work of the teacher in the domestic science department, Miss Woodside, in arranging the lunches, and the work of the class in cooking and preparing the lunches should not be overlooked. Perhaps the Veterans did not realize real-ize that their efforts were resulting in a double benefit, first in furnishing the food and second in giving the class a real chance to prove its ability abil-ity in cooking and preparing a good wholesome lunch at a minimum cost, that in itself a worthy cause. The organization has not ceased its labor after its first flash of success suc-cess but is continuing its efforts so that lunches may be provided until the end of the school year. Milk bottles have been placed in all the places of business in town in which you are requested to drop whatever contribution you may feel able to give. Other dances and entertainments entertain-ments are contemplated for the good cause. The Veterans of Foreign Wars was organized in 1899 shortly after the close of the Spanish-American War and for some years had but a. slow growth, recently however it has made almst phenominal increase in numbers and influence and today is one of the most active of patriotic organizations. Its membership is composed of those who have seen service under the stars and stripes on foreign soil or water. |
