Show Livestock.) (jyfc 1 Revolutionary changes are taking place in tho meat business, all the wuy from production and feeding of j live stock down to distribution to the I ultimuto consumer. On the one . hand, production of meat animals is! more and more tho business of the small producer, who raises live stock as a means of profitable diversification diversifica-tion and of fertilization of the soil It would seem that in the production produc-tion and feeding of live stock, there is a tendency towards getting away, from so-called "mass production" in favor of the Idea of a few animals i on every farm and ranch. Not so with the meat business, it would seerm. Important changes are taking place in the distribution of meats to the public. We have seen the advent of the chain store system J featuring immense buying power arid often narrow margins of profit, to; such an extent that many of the in-j dependent" retail meat dealers have been forced out of business. These chain meat stores have developed to a point where several of the larger, concerns are now doing their own slaughtering and meat packing. J Press dispatches tell of the plea on the part of the producers' organiza-! tion in the Corn Belt calling upon the government for a modification of the "packers consent decree", permitting the national meat packers to engage in the retail meat business. This organization believes that the packers pack-ers should be permitted to retail meats in competition with those chain store organizations which are both slaughtering and retailing on an extensive scale. They feel that the big packers with their strong financial finan-cial set-up and efficient organization, might well pare down the margin between be-tween what the producer receives for his live stock and what the consumer pays. No expression has come forth from the large meat packers to indicate indi-cate that they care to go into the business bus-iness of meat retailing, however. All of these things seem to point towards the gradual elimination of the small independent meat dealer, who with his limited capital, modest buying buy-ing power and single location, is unable un-able to compete with the chain stores, with large buying power, adequate finances and volume sales.
