Show u U of ofU U. U Boasts I Only Quake I Recorder Seismograph Located on Campus Between the Park and Gymnasium The only seismograph in the intermountain area stands in a n twenty b by p thirty foot concrete building between the Park and g gymnasium buildings on the Utah campus The nearest one to the east is at Denver and to the I west at Berkeley Cal CaI There arc are i none to the north or south of the Utah university A seismograph is an instrument for recording earthquakes The Thc machine at the university is set seton seton seton on on a n five foot concrete shaft and records the vibrations of the earth earthon on a moving drum It works on the thc same principle as some types of temperature recording instruments instruments instruments ments where a vibrating line is drawn on a graph Only real earth movements are taken on th the graph as as such things as explosions and gunfire expend their energy in blowing up in the air and dont don't carry along the earth When interviewed about the thc seismograph Dr Frederick J. J Pack who is in charge of the operation of thc the machine issued the following statement The building was completed less than a year ago and contains all of the best features known to modern modern modern mod mod- ern science The chief of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey who visited here recently told toM me that the station was the best in inthe inthe inthe the United States It is capable of recording even very delicate earthquakes earthquakes earthquakes earth earth- quakes as far away as Iceland Alaska and South America A short time ago an earthquake oc occurred occurred occurred oc- oc in the region 1000 miles east of Palestine which was recorded record record- ed at the station Because a seismograph is exceedingly exceedingly ex ex- delicate and very costly only people experienced in its use are allowed to handle it Whenever a movement of the earth takes place within reach of the effective radius adius of a seismograph its scope and intensity is recorded on the graph raph The experienced observer can tell from this graph the location loca location location tion of the quake and approximately approximate- approximate ly y how severe its movement was Earth movements that otherwise would pass un-noticed un are picked up by these sensitive machines and thereby hereby increase mans man's knowledge of changes in the contour of the earth |
