Show Making the Tax Burden Easier Recent developments brought out at a joint meeting of the Monro's of Supervisors Of the four Drainage Districts in Millard Mil-lard County, indicate better times ahead for taxpayers. In two of I iie Districts for the year 1922, the taxes have been reduced 2fi',; and it is anticipated,. that by careful management of the finances these taxes can be still further reduced next year to an amount approximating 33 7" Under the laws that existed at the lime the Districts were organized, it became necessary for I lie Hoards of Supervisors to levy heavy taxes in the first years and at. the very time when the farmers were receiving no ben-ei'il ben-ei'il from Hie improvements then in process of construction; but sufficient levies have now been made to satisfy the requirements require-ments of that law and the taxes therefore should be considerably considera-bly lower for at least five years hereafter. This reduction in taxes, both present and prospective, together with the benefit the lands are now receiving from the drainage, indicates that a much higher percentage of taxes will be paid hereafter- A considerable amount of new land is being cropped this year, due to the drainage improvement, and a better outlook is dawning dawn-ing for our farmers in this section. News given on the outside, out-side, as to the payment of taxes delinquent for four years, whereby the sum delinquent four years ago may be paid without 'paying the intervening years, will add to the general feeling of hopefullness. The peak of the burden has been reached. The hardest part of our load has been lifted. What with the land producing better, and with the burden financially, financial-ly, doubly eased, in the two respects of (1st) a lowering of the drainage tax rate, and (2nd), unit years on delinquent items, with these two betterments, we should move right along. It will improve morale. It will change an atmosphere of pessimism pessim-ism to one of enthusiastic optimism. And with resultant good to all. We are rounding the turn into a home stretch of better going. |
