Y. The college says thnt" If more dairymen dairy-men realized how the feeding of legumes decreases the cost of milk production, there would be an eveD more noticeable Increase In the acreage acre-age of alfalfa. As It Is, the growth of alfalfa increased In this stale from 3o,343 acres in 1009 to 110,783 in 1919. The Cortland county test to which the college refers was made unwitting ly by a dairyman. During the early part of the winter, his cows were being fed good alfalfa hay and a' 20 per cent protein grain mixture. He had no slIV The middle of January, the alfalfa In the mow from which he was feeding feed-ing gave out and he started feeding timothy. Immediately milk production pfr cow began to decline at the rate of three pounds a day. Then the dairy-roan dairy-roan began feeding more grain, but even this did not check the decline. Not until the alfalfa was again reached In the mow did he succeed In getting his herd back to normal production. |
