In Salt Lake City the people turned down both the American party and the tlood (iovernmeiit party which was simply a mask lor the Republican party, und deetod the nonpartisan non-partisan ticket, made up of two Republicans, Re-publicans, two Democrats and a H cltdist. The M)r old Tribune keeps up its whine about "church Influence" In the lectlon and thinks the election of the non partisan ticket a calamity. It Is undoubtedly a calamity for the outfit now holding office, but a mighty good thing (or the people. The Socialists Social-ists made remarkable gains, polling over 3,000 votes. The Socialists made heay gains all over the country. A Socialist was i elected mayor in Schnectedy, N. Y., i and S'ci lallst mnyors were elected In i eight Ohio towns, besides many other towns. The Socialists are making the old pni ties sit up and take notice. The bigger the vote for them the sooner the practical reforms they stand for ' will lie carried out. i I The insurgent movement also shows i growth. In some cases by the defeat of the Republicans, as In Massachu- setts, and some times by the defeat of the Democrats, as In New Jersey and ' New York. Ohio has elected delegates to the constitutional convention t pledged to the Initiative and refereii- dum. This addition to representative government gov-ernment Is making remarkable headway head-way throughout the oeuntry, and California Cali-fornia is the latest state to adopt it; , also the recall, which applies to all , elective officers. Including Judges. This Is California's answer to President , Taft's veto of the constitution of Art-sons Art-sons because It had the Initiative, ref endum and recall. California also adopted woman suffrage. Considering that for 40 years her legislatures, exe- , cutlves and courts have been conlroled by the Southern Pacific railway, this Is a remarkable revolution.
