Show GUARDSMEN BEING SENTJBACK HOME FIVE REGIMENTS OF STATE MILITIA MIL-ITIA RELIEVED FROM BORDER BOR-DER DUTY. War Department Officials Say Move Does Not Indicate Any Change of Policy or General Withdrawal of Guardsmen. Washington. Five national guard regiments were ordered home from the Mexican border on Thursday. In a statement announcing the order or-der the war department said it was in continuation of the policy "announced "an-nounced some time ago gradually to withdraw national guard regiments from the border as conditions permit 1 and, in accordance with the recommendations recommen-dations of General Funston, these regiments have been ordered home." War department officials said the order did not indicate any change In policy or general withdrawal of the guardsmen from the border and had no relation to the proceedings of the joint conference at Atlantic City. They said that as rapidly as conditions, condi-tions, on any portion of the border are considered by General Funston to, jus-tlfy jus-tlfy the withdrawal of the troopfcit is the department's intention to bring home additional regiments and release them from federal service. Approximately 100,000 national guardsmen will remain on the border when these five regiments with a total to-tal strength of about 6,000 have been withdrawn. The regiments will start home as soon as transportation facilities facili-ties will permit, and all probably will be at their state muster point by Thanksgiving. |
