C bugle corps blew Taps and the student body along with the faculty stood up and with bowed heads observed a minute of silence in in honor of the men who founded the university eighty four years ago Early this morning the Spurs girls' girls pep organization began selling selling selling sell sell- ing red and white carnations priced at two for five cents at various I vantage points on the Utah camI cam cam- I pus They are still selling the carI carnations carnations car car- nations and each girl is trying I eagerly to win the prize given to the Spur girl selling the greatest number of flowers Their initiative initiative initiative initia initia- tive is compelling each student to dig down and buy The girls also have kept reminding students that it would be so much nicer if they wore carnations to the dance this afternoon At the time the Chronicle eagle came off the press President George Thomas and George Q Morris president of the alumni association officially opened the day with brief laudatory speeches concerning the founders while the university band the girls girl's glee club and Bob Reese mens men's glee club soloist have gathered gathered gathered gath gath- ered in front of the Park building to play and sing school sings The balloons which were distributed distributed distri distri- buted to the students previous to their arrival at the Park building steps were let loose as the special Founders Founder's Day flag was raised to the accompanying salute of the bugle corps This afternoon from 4 p. p m. m to 6 p. p m. m a free matinee dance willbe will willbe willbe be given in the mens men's gymnasium The dance program which was planned to feature old time dance tunes as were popular at the time the school was founded has been changed The program will include only modern songs and dances A well known Salt Lake orchestra will furnish the music Grant Valentine is the chairman of the Founders' Founders Day committee wJ while le Marjorie Evans and Betty BettyLou BettyLou BettyLou Lou Millikin are assisting him I |
