Show COUNTY AGENT'S COLUMN THE GOVERNMENT REQUESTS A FAVORABLE BALANCE FOR FEED AND POULTRY Poultry numbers like other livestock live-stock numbers have increased beyond be-yond the available feed supply. In order to more adequately balance the feed and poultry, the following follow-ing practices will help save feed: (1) feed only those birds that are healthy and in good production; (2) provide a balanced feed at all times; (3) keep your feed hoppers in good repair; (4) never fill the feed hopper more than two-thirds full; (5) exterminate the rodents, pests and parasites that eat and destroy large quantities of feeds; (6) save concentrates by encouraging encoura-ging young stock to eat more green feed. Properly balanced feeds should be available for the birds at all times. About 40 pounds of mash and 45 pounds of scratch is needed need-ed for a full year. Use home grown clean milk and alfalfa feed regularly. Clean the houses frequently. CONTROL SLUGS AND SNAILS Slugs and snails may be eliminated elimina-ted by a mixture of metaldehyde and corn meal, bran or similar material. ma-terial. The mixture should consist of 1 ounce of powdered metaldehyde and 3 pounds of wheat bran. This mixture is effective under some conditions, and readily attracts snails and slugs, and it may be slightly moistened or applied dry. Best time to make the mixture appear attractive is late evenings, and it should be moistened and distributed at this time. It should not be applied out-of-doors just before a rain, as it will be washed wash-ed away and its effectiveness lost. |
