Show i A Souvenir from Africa 1 Captain M. M. Reeves, now in j Africa, son-in-law of the senior j Beckwith, sent a souvenir gift from j there, typical of that area. I To Mrs. Beckwith he sent a hand I hammered brass coffee set pot . and cups with tray; the coffee pot j Dears a number of Arabic charac- i ters, as well las the tray. Their j method of making coffee is to boil I it until it is stronger than sulphuric acid, then pile in enough sugar to make a syrup, and then serve about a thimbleful of that decoction decoc-tion to each guest, wdio sips rapturously raptu-rously between deeply inhaled cig-aret cig-aret puffs, murmuring "May Allah requite you, O host." To Frank S. Beckwith he sent two drinking cups of an aluminum alloy, made out of aluminum parts Df a captured German airplane quite a trophy. To the old man he sent some African-Arab coins, French Protectorate, Protec-torate, with some of the inscriptions inscrip-tions in the alphabet we know, and around that Arab characters, probably "Merciful Allah, All Powerful Pow-erful and All Highest." One of them is a one Franc piece; another ten centimes. Then from the old cite of ancient Carthage he sent some roof tiles, dating from the ancient city which the Romans destroyed j as 1heir most bitter rival. j The whole set of souvenirs are very interesting, and a most prized possession. |
