Show Gas Line Break Causes Car To Burn Sunday A broken gas line turned a 1942 Packard into a blazing inferno on Sunday afternoon on the highway between Delta and Holden near where Harding used to be. No one was hurt. Owner of the car, Ted Atherly of Salt Lake City, reported that the line broke near the hot manifold mani-fold and the heat ignited the gas. The fire soon got inside the cab and completely destroyed the inside in-side and three spare tires that were in the trunk. Passers-by reported the fire to the Delta Fire Department but the car had been burning for an hour by the time the message was delivered de-livered and help taken back. The tires in the back made the fire extra hard to control. People who passed the car later lat-er could still smell the rubber. The paint was practically "melted" off. The department did not drive the truck to the fire because they could make faster time in private cars in which they carried extinguishers. exting-uishers. Members of the fire department ask again that townspeople cooperate coop-erate when they hear the fire signal sig-nal by not trying to folow the fire engine and members' cars that are going to the fire. They create a traffic hazard and slow down the effectiveness of the department. Within a few minutes after the signal for Sunday's fire was blown, there were cars lined up for two blocks waiting to follow the fire department cars. |
