Show T I MILLARD COUNTY CHRONICLE Delta. Utah, Thurs.. June 21, 1951 Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Smith, of Mon rovia, Cal., are ueua visitors this week with their daughter, Mrs ' R F. Nichols and family. : i use as war gases but discovered mat some ui mtse were more as insecticides. Of that group, parathion and tetra-eth-pyrophosphate (TEPP) have been used extensively by farmers as in-secticides. inese riiit;LLn;iuca att toxic to human beings when ab-sorbed through the skin, inhaled or ingested. The symptoms of this type of poisoning include the fol-lowing: giddiness, headache, nau-sea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, constriction of the pupils, excessive salivation, excessive wat ering of the eyes, weakness, mus-cular twitching, and tightness of the chest. Should anyone have these symptoms they should im-mediately see their physician. These insecticides are rapidly decomposed following their use as insecticides & because the known decomposition products are not toxic after a reasonable time, they are not considered as a health hazard. It is the general consen-sus of opinion of the authorities that there is no toxicity after two weeKS . mIfiltf Ji ieeuliLll. Unaa.iiu avicic primarily at the time o'f appli-cation. Great precautions should be taken when handling these pro-ducts. The following are precau-tions that should be used: 1. Avoid contact with the skin. If the skin is contaminated, im-mediately wash with soap and wat er. 2. Avoid inhalation of insecti-cides in the form of mist, dust or areosol by wearing a respirator or mask. 3. At the end of the operation, all clothing should be removed, followed by a thorough washing with warm water and soap. 4. Avoid contamination of food; smoking and eating should be pro-hibited in operating areas. 5. Any individual with symp-toms of headache or tightness of chest when using these insecticides should be removed from the area and medical attention sought if symptoms continue or become any worse. Because of the extreme toxicity of parathion, and tetra-eth- yl pyro-phosphate, the State Health De-partment does not at this time endorse their use. If, however, parathion and their related compounds are used, all precautions should be strictly ad-hered to. Aircraft in dusting and spraying- is .not recommended. The application should be done by a ground rig using the liquid spray since in this way the application of the insecticide can be control-led. In the last legislature two bills were passed relating to insectic-ides and will go into effect July 1st of this year. Essentially these bills require that all insecticides be registered with the State De-partment of Agriculture and meth-ods of application must be approv-ed. Also custom sprayers must be licensed where application is made to crops. This means that the con-trol of insecticides rest with the State Department of Agriculture. Varns Against Dangers Of Parathion The insecticide season has again arrived and, because of this, the State Department of Health re-cognizes the need for information concerning the newer insecticides. Progressive agriculture requires constant development of more ef-fective insecticides since agricult-ure development on the modern scale brings with it new pests, which ' require new and more ef-fective materials for their control. Just as DDT conquered many of the pest problems in the recent past, so parathion and tetra-eth-pyrophosphate is conquering insec-ticid- al problems for which the old-er insecticides have proved unsat-isfactory. Beckwith Business Manager Entered as Second Class matter at the Postoffice at Delta, Utah, under the Act of Congress, March 3, 1879 NOTICE TO DELTA TUNGSTEN MINERS The federal tungsten program is not final. Revision can be forced, if enough people will act in unison. I am told that funds are provided for crude ore stockpiles and the Defense Minerals Administration is authorized to establish them where mill facilities are lacking. The min-ers of Boulder County, Colorado have organized and forced an is-sue. Mr. P. H. Bradley of DMA has promised them a stockpile. The same should be possible for Delta. For a number of months I .have been involved with D. J. Garrick in opening the Paye Mine in Am-as- a Valley and don't care to lose my investment without a fight. If enough of the tungsten property owners of this region will sign a petition pointing out the need of a crude ore stockpile for Delta, I will go to Washington (at my own expense) and see what can be done. If Boulder, Colorado can get results, so can Delta, Utah. Write me your name and address on a postcard and the petition will be sent for you to sign. We want to demonstrate that the need for a stockpile is general and affects many people. Thanks for your help. Arthur Blake Thomas, 39 Exchange Place, Salt Lake City, Utah Pd. Adv. No so long ago, fires originating in the roofs of homes and other structures ranked second among the principal caus-es of fire. But now, reports Percy Bugbee, head of the NFPA, roof fires have dropped to tenth on the list. Mr. Bugbee attributes this de-cline in part to enforcement of building codes in 600-od- d cities prohibiting flammable roofing. In addition, practically all new buildings have roofs of fire re-sistant materials such as asphalt shingles, also generally used for 'of homes and farm uildings.
