QltSiotticlc Volume 39 Number 9 Delta, Utah, Thursday, August 26, 1948 $3.50 a Year in Advance Millard County Fair and "Days of the Old West" Celebration Successfully Concluded; Thousands See All Events Millard County Fair, and "Days of the Old West celebration held Friday and Saturday at Deseret are now but happy memories, and the entire program was highly successful. Four thousand persons or more thronged the Fair Grounds each night for the rodeo, and all day crowds gathered for the pro-- , grams, Fair exhibits, children's aft-ernoon sports, and carnival fun. Friday moming an excellent pro-gram opened the events, with tal-- i ent from the young county resi- -' dents. Heber G. Bennion, represent-ing Gov. Herbert B. Maw, spoke, complimenting county-wid- e accom-plishments. Saturday morning the featured speaker was Vivian Meik, Deseret News columnist and news analyst. His talk, comparing con-ditions in Europe today with those existing here, was 35 minutes long, and altogether too short for the many deeply interested listeners. Fair exhibits were outstanding, with a wealth of blue ribbons and outstanding items, se-lected to go to the State Fair. Ag-ricultural, handicraft, cooking and club displays were excellent and many. The rodeo was h, with plenty of hair-raisin- g action to keep the crowds shouting. A record of 8 seconds was set. Bruce Wadsworth, Panada, won cowboy champion-ship. Matt Cropper, veteran Deser-et trouper, placed second high for the trophy. His time on calf-ropin- g was 16.9 seconds. Shorty Valdez shone at calf-ropin- g with 15.1 se-conds time. An accident marred Saturday night's show, when David Wynn, Nephi old rider was ser-iously injured. Coming out of the chute on a Brahma bull, on the second jump, as Wynn leaned for-ward, the bull's head came up and their heads cracked together. Mr. Wynn, unconcious, was rushed to the hospital in Salt Lake City. He received a fractured skull, and a ' report Tuesday was that his con-- , dition was fair, and he was doing well, although He had rallied slightly when his par-ents were at the hospital. A purse of $141.60 was collected Saturday night in his behalf, from among the rodeo boys and some of the audience. Although still serious, hope was held for his early and complete recovery. Ormus Dutson, chairman of the two-da- y event, expressed his ap-preciation of the tireless efforts put forth by all committees and aids in making the celebration such a n eminently successful affair.
