March 29.- - An officer and three men from the army balloon school at Itoss field, Arcadia, were seriously burned today by explosion of nn army balloon In Coyote pass, near the MldwtcK Country Coun-try club, about eight miles from Los Angeles. The Injured were Mcut. .T. It. Sullivan and three enlisted men. They were members of a detail from Itoss field sent to take buck to Arcadia Arca-dia a balloon In which an ascension had been nude by Lieut. Urorgc E. I Watts. j Lieutenant WattH had reached an altitude of 13,000 feet when he decided de-cided to land. Whon ho was 1C00 feet from the ground he made a pat-achutc pat-achutc leap, leaving the big bag, with its gradually escaping gus, to drirt to earth. Ho landed safe and escaped injury, but tho balloon exploded almost al-most immediately after It reached tho earth near the detail from the balloon school and tho four men were seriously burned. The opinion wns expressed that the explosion wai caused b a cigarette. |
