Show BENSON BENSON, Oct. 13. The digging of sugar beets has begun and tho crop is dlscouraglngly light, tho ton-ago ton-ago not being over from 33 percent tp 60 percent of last years crop, and as the price paid is so low that it is doubtful if sugar beet growers will break oven. The sugar beet Industry Indus-try certainly looks discouraging and it would be an unfortunate condition condi-tion if our splendid sugar factories representing such a vast amount of capltol should be compelled to discontinue dis-continue or suspend operations. Thero are many reasons why the sugar beet crop is so light this year among which might bo mentioned tho great amount of molsturo we had last year making tho ground so soft that in digging nnd hauling tho ground became so badly tramped, tramp-ed, and the lato spring made tho farmers so anxious to got to work that they plowed, their ground be-foro be-foro It was sufficiently dry, and when the crop was planted the lack of rain caused the ground to. get very hard; then, tho unusually dry I summer, the army worm and the beet rot have combined to bring about the meagre tonnage. Messrs Nutting and Chllders are in our ward trying to show the peo-iple peo-iple the error of their ways and tell, 'them how to be saved. Mr. Chllders I has been among us before and always al-ways depqrtcd himself as a gentleman. gentle-man. i Our Sunday School, Conference J was held yesterday forenoon. Dr. J A. W. Ensign and Miss Enid Ruff jof the S. S. Board ot tho Cache 'Stake were in attendance. They expressed ex-pressed their satisfaction ot the program pro-gram ot exercises rendered. It might be rather ancient history. yet it is never too lato to tell something some-thing good, so we will saythat the entertainment given some time ago by the ward choir under tho direction direc-tion of chorister, Mr. Jenson Fal-'slev, Fal-'slev, was one of tho very best ever given In Benson. Mr. Frank Harris Har-ris -and two of his daughters nnd ,JIr. Hansen contributed a great deal to tho success of tho entertainment. Throe young men from Switzerland came down from Logan and sang several songs. Our homo talent also did splendidly. It Is doubtful if a better entertainment has been given In Cache County for a long time. The only regret was that moro people peo-ple of our ward did not patronize it, and show their appreciation of the effort of those In charge of the affair af-fair and share in the pleasure of tho evening. Tho proceeds wero used In helping to pay for the new piano. Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Reese took their son Victor to Salt Lake City last week to attend the Utah University. Uni-versity. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Reese went with them. They spent a few days in the city. Nearly all tho Benson people attended at-tended tho Cache County fair from one to three days. No doubt wo had our share of exhibits. Ono'of the pleasing things about tho fair is that It gives one such a good opportunity opportun-ity to see his or her friends, i Mr. Alex Ricks is drilling for a flowing well for Mr. Jonathan Smith. Word recently came to tho writer that a flow of oil had been struck but we fear that Is news too good to bo true. Our schools have been suspended for two weeks to give the young people peo-ple a chance to work in the beets. |
