Show H OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG MEN. 1 (j Years ago ambitious young men could stake out a claim on the public lands and in a few years have a good m farm. Today good farm land commands high prices. B Manufacturing business is so concentrated that a man M needs influence and capital. Competition is fierce among 1 small retail stores, and unless a man is a natural born H trader it is not a promising field. M Yet many conditions are favorable. One of these is m the fact that boys and young men can get all the work B they want during school vacations and immediately after m leavimr school. Wages also have increased. A common m rate of wages for errand boys, office boys, and odd job m boys in factories and stores was formerly 50 cents a day. m .Very few boys have been working the past summer at B any such figure as that. m With the present demand for labor, a great many boys H should be able to save money and secure a little nest egg. H It is not so much the amount of it as the fact that they B have acquired the saving habit. Many boys, of course, M have to contribute to family support. If their parents B need the help to maintain a good standard of family cornel corn-el fort, the children should give it cheerfully. No money 1 return they can make can begin to pay what has been M given them. M At present prices of farm and factory work, the boy 1 -who quits school with a little bank account should be able m to add to it steadily. There will be few times when he 1 will have to loaf. He would better be careful how he B risks that capital in uncertain ventures. B But he can always be sure that land is a good invest- 1 ment. He can always find undeveloped land at a moder- B ate price that can be bought on a mortgage. The labor 1 of developing it will be no more exhausting than stand- H ing up all day before a bench in a poorly ventilated fac- lory. It is the opportunity of today for the young man H with small capital. Baal n |
