SEASONAL DISTRIBUTION OF EGG PRODUCTION DETERMINED Seasonal distribution of egg production pro-duction docs not seem to bo at all affected af-fected by tho ago of tho hen up to thrco years nt least, but total production produc-tion affects tho distribution regardless regard-less of age, according to a study of tho yearly egg records of several flocks of stnglo-combed whlto leghorns leg-horns of different ages mndo by ths experiment station of the Utah agricultural agri-cultural college. Tho full results of this Inquiry nro set forth In Experiment Experi-ment Bulletin 149, Just Issued. Much has been published recently In a number num-ber of tho leading poultry magazines regarding tho relntlvo valuo of pullets pul-lets nnd older hens ns winter egg producers pro-ducers thnt might lend us to bellove that after a hen Is n year or moro old sho is little or no better ns a winter egg producer than tho sago hen, bluo grouse, or some of tho other wild fowls In our mountains which, because of environment Iny some eggs that they can hardly porpetuato their kind. This Is not entirely true, as some of the best winter records made' by tho Utah experiment station flocks have been during tho second and third, while tho two poorest records for this part of tho year wero made by tho flocks of 1910 and 1911 during dur-ing tho first or pullet winter. If. however, the pullets nro hatched at tho right tlmo and nro then glvon tho right kind of caro they will usually usu-ally lay well when tho prlco of eggs Is highest. It takes consldornblo tlmo nnd ex-ponso ex-ponso to hatch and rnlso n flock of good pullets and wo should not discard dis-card thorn from our laying pons when thoy aro only ono or two years old If they will give good returns during tho second and third years. Keeping Keep-ing tho hens until they havo finished tho third laying year Instoad of soiling soil-ing at tho end of tho second season reduces tho cost nnd trouble of ro-newing ro-newing the flock Just ono-thlrd. A number of important Items such as ngo, environment, tlmo of hatching, tlmo of maturity, dato of laying tho first egg, and tho effect of each of theso fnctors on winter nnd yearly production of tho flocks nt tho Utah experiment station and In other soc-tlons soc-tlons of tho country havo boon studied and theso results aro also glvon In Bulloting No. 149.
