Misfiring of tho first shot after the miners entered the pit was reported responsible. The explosion occurred at tho No. 6 landing, where 60 of the 2G0 men In the mlno wero working. Most of the miners on 'that landing wero killed. At No. 7 landing tha rescue party found eight more bodies and a largo number of Injured. Rescue parties had trouble In making mak-ing headway. Several rescuers were overcome by tho gas, which mado many miners temporarily insane. Desplto the difficulties, many dead and Injured were brought to the surface. sur-face. Among the heroes was Jack Mc-Kenzle, Mc-Kenzle, a boy, who responded to tho first call for help. Ho went down td No. G landing and worked there un til he was forced to return to tho surface. sur-face. After recovering somewhat from tho gas ho returned to his work among the Injured and dead. This time he was sent to the surface unconscious un-conscious and he died while being carried to a hospital. |
