Show REASONS WHY THE MILK TESTS VARY t It is often observed that milk is (B)1 poorer In fat in tho summer and becomes be-comes richer again in tho fall, and tho farmers have generally assumed this to bo duo to tho watery condition condi-tion of grasd as compared with the dry feed received during tho winter. win-ter. Tests havo shown that the cause of this Is not grass feeding, but tho temperature. For some reason thero is a tendency ten-dency for tho milk to bo richer In fat during cold weather and to be-como be-como pooTcr when tho weathor becomes be-comes very warm, regardless of thf feed consumed. A second factor of importance as influencing tho richness of milk Is tho fatness of tho cow at tho time of freshening. A cow high In flesh at calving tlmo gives very much richer milk for somo tlmo than would be tho case it she wero thin. This knowledgo Is now mado use of by every breeder of dairy cattle who desires to mako tho largest possible pos-sible record for milk and buttcrfat production. Another Interesting discovery dis-covery is that when a cow is underfed under-fed she temporarily gives richer milk rather than thinner as might bo expected. This is of great importanco In connection with making tests of cows, and a failure to understand this effect has resulted in wrong conclusions from many experiments: conducted with cows in the pa.'A |
