It Is understood the President H will make it clear that sufficient rev- H enues (or all purposes are assured, I but that-the millions ot emergency H revenue must be raised to prevent ff deficit. It was H agreed that the ways and means com- I mlttee should work out a bill which H will be 'repprted , early next week. H, Mr. Underwood has aBtted the H President to indicate what course ho H proposed to recommend in raising H the needed revenues, but up to to- H night tho President had not done so. H Suggestions have been made that H beer, whisky, domestic wines, tobac- H co, railroad and" theatre tickets, gas- H ollne, patent medicines, soft drinks H and other simitar commodities bo H taxed. No agreement has, been reached, however, by tho ways and H means committer majority. H There is said to be a war revenue H plan which rests undisclosed In Ma- H Jorlty Leader Underwood's mind. His H purpose Is not to call )ne committee H together until the President's mes- H sage has been received. ,He has with H held his plan to avoid unnecessary discussion, but believes It will lie slmplo enough to allow passage with out delay. ' The treasury department reported today that customs revenues dropped off about $11,000,000 during August. Total customs receipts for that month, were 119,431,363. Slight Increases qy. er August, 1913, were shown In In-ternal In-ternal revenue and corporation tax returns, but the total-recelpts for tho month were nearly $10,000,000 less than In August last year. |
