Show MODERN WOODMEN OF AMERICA HAVE NEAR RIOT;' POLICE CALLED Toledo, Juno 17. Tho first actual skirmish and a near riot between administration ad-ministration and Insurgent factions of tho Modern Woodmen of America that provoked a call for police and threatened threat-ened to disrupt the convention took placo today. Though pandemonium provalled for moro than two hours and delegates, spectators and convention hall a furnishings fur-nishings were roughly Jumbled together to-gether no ono was seriously hurt and the encounter ended at noon with both sides occupying their original positions. Tho trouble started when Head Consul Talbot announced that, because be-cause the credentials committee was not ready to report on delegates to be seated, the convention would adjourn ad-journ until Thursday. Talbot put the question with the result that an uproarious response of "noes" -defeated the endeavor. After explaining that the convention could not transact business until delegates eligible to participate were designated designat-ed by the credentials committee Talbot Tal-bot declared the meotlng adjourned. Immediately chairs, tables, tbo speaker's speak-er's stand, and the piano were occupied occu-pied by shouting protestors. Several encounters between regulars and Insurgents took placo. When delegates refused to leavo tho hall and both administration and Insurgent leaders wero determined to speak in the face of continuous turmoil, tur-moil, a band entored the contest of din and disorder with This Is tho Life, and extra police responded to tho call sent in by regulars. From 9:05 to 11 a. m. tho band played This Is the Life, whllo regular and Insurgent Insurg-ent leaders shouted. At 11 o'clock the band was Jammed. Tho convention then adjourned and tho commltteo on credentials resumed Its sessions. |
