Show Elder Bodrero Sends A Poem Mr. Arthur Batcson Is In receipt of a letter from our townsman, Elder Louis Bodrero who is in England laboring lab-oring as a Mormon missionary. Elder Bodrero reports that ho is In the best of health. A poem was sent homo by htm with tbo comment thnt this Is tho way tho English feel toward the Germans. It Is as follows: THE DAY By Henry Chapped (Tho author of this magnificent poem, is Mr. Henry Chnppcll, a railway porter at Bath. Mr. Chappcll Is known to his comrades as tho "Bath Railway Poet." A poem such ns this lifts him to tho rank of a national poet.) You boasted tho Day, and you toasted tho Day, And now tho Day has comu. Blasphemer, braggart and coward all, Little you reck of tho numbing ball, Tho blasting shell, or tho "white arm's" tall, As they speed poor humans home. You spied for tho Day, -you lied for tho Day, And woke tho Day's red spleen. Monster, who asked God's aid Divine,, Then strowed His seas with tho ghastly mine; Not all tho waters of all the Rhine Can wash thy foul hands clean. You dreamed for the Day, you schemed for the Day; Watch how tho Day will go. Slayer of age and youth and prime (Defenseless slain for never a crime) Thou art steeped In blood as a hog ln'sllmo, Falso friend and cowardly too. You havo sown for the Day, you havo grown for tho Day; Yours Is the Harvest red. Can you hear tho groans and tho awful aw-ful cries? Can you see tho heap uf slain that lies, And sightless turned to tho flame-split flame-split skies The glassy eyes of tho dead? You havo wronged for tho Day, you have longed for tho Day That lit the awful flame. TIs nothing to you that hill and plain Yield sheaves of dead men amid tho grain; That widows mourn for their loved ones Blaln, And mothers curse thy name. But after the Day there's a prlco to pay For tho sleepers under tho sod, And Ho you have mocked for many a day Listen and hear what Ho has to say: "Vengeance Is mine, I will repay." What can you say to God? Reprinted from tho London Dally Express (Copyright) . mi a |
