Show -IT If A RURAL SCHOOL JUNIOR ASSISTANT That nn assistant from tho ranks ot pupils greatly Increases "tho en elency of tho teacher In largo rural schools has been successfully proved In at least ono district school near Eureka, Montana. This school has several eighth grade pupils who, as In all district schools, aro older and moro mature than eighth graders In city schools. Ono of them, a young girl of fifteen was appointed assistant at tho beginning of tho school year nt ten dollars u, month. Her duties nro that of floor monitor for tho ono room building. After soveral months' trial everyone was so well satisfied thut they wonder won-der why such a simple and effectual expedient was not thought ot sooner. Whllo tho tenclier is hearing recitations, reci-tations, tills assistant, an eighth grnilo pupil, fifteen years ot ago. pass es quietly among the pupils, main taining order, giving assistance to" the lower grado pupils, supplying seat work to tho little folks spelling and pronouncing dlfllcult words, correcting cor-recting language work and other papers, pa-pers, and' everywhere going to the hands upraised. Tho teacher In chargo can thus do-vote do-vote full tlmo which Is little enough In rural schools to tho recitations. This saving alone, In tho opinion of tho teacher, amounts to twcnty-llvo per cent, to say nothing of the Increased In-creased enthusiasm and cnorgy which' sho can put Into a recitation when there is no nervous strain from Interruptions In-terruptions and discipline The Junior assistant recites regularly regu-larly with tho eighth grade, most ot tho preparations ot lessons being dono at homo. It will often happen thnt two or three In tho eighth grade expect to become teachers. Tho work of assistant assist-ant will bo excellent training for them as well as advantageous to tho school. In this pnrtlcular school it Is planned plan-ned to havo them gradually work In-to In-to hearing some of tho lower grade recitations. Such an assistant means a slightly additional expenso but considering tho results It is a profltablo Investment. Invest-ment. Dick Dickinson In Farm and Fireside. |
