Show WAR CUTS OFF IMPORTS OF BARYTES Many Deposits in United States Accord, ing to United States Geolog-. Geolog-. j, ical" Survey. i Since tho outbreak of the war in ff Europe many American users ot for- I elgn barytes have been forced toj I look at home for their future sup- I piles, and It may be woll to Inform, I the general public that there la- un- I doubtedly a good supply of bajite In H country. Barytes has a wide vnrl- I ty of uses In the manufheturo ot I plant lltbopone, wall paper, glass B artificial Ivory, Insecticides, fertilizer, H H In 1912 Uje United States produced H' 37,478 short tons ot barytes, valued at f 153,313, or $4.09 a ton and to- H ported26,186 short tons of crude' ba- H rytehs, valued at $52,467 or $2 a ton. H in 1913 the domestic production was H 45,298 short tons, valued at $166,275 H or $3.45 a on, and the imports ot H crude barytes were 35,840 short tons, H valued at $61,409, or $1.71 a ton., H From these figures It can be readily H seen that thoso users ot barytea lo- cated on the eastern sVaboard have H been able to 'procure foreign barytes H cheaper, than they could buf doVes- H tic barytes. M The following facts regarding tho m location both ot mines in operation M and ot undeveloped deposits nro glv-. M en by the United States Geological H Survey and. will be pt present Intor- H In the United States tho principal. M sources of supply are tho Missouri M and Appalachian districts. In 1913 H the Missouri district furnished bo- H tween 68 and 69 per cent or tho to- M tal production of the United States, 1 and among tho Appalachian States 1 Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, H South Carolina and Virginia, named H in tho order ot production, reported H en output ot crude barytes. H So far as known, no barytes has H been produced from Alabama mines, ,H since 1906. There are some deposits H which probably- could be worked in Calhoun, Etowah, and St. Clair coun-i" coun-i" ties, In tho "northeastern part ot tho mf State, and in Ulbb county, near thtj H center. H Within a radius of about 1G miles H centered about Cartorsvllle, Bartow H County, Georgia, considerable iron H ore, ocher, and barlto are mined from residual claya derived from H Cambrian had .Ordovlclan rocks, The H deposits aro on the cast side ot the. H Appalachian fold and form a north- H ward continuation ot the 'Alabama field. H In Kentucky barlte deposits are H known in the central (Blue Grass) H and western portions ot the State. H Barite has been mined in Boyle, Fay- H ette, and Garrard counties south of H Lexington, though deposits are known H in 13 countlesycentored about the H capital. H The greater part ot the barytea, produced in the, United States is ob-H ob-H talned from deposits In Washington, H St,. Francois, Franklin, and Jeffer-H Jeffer-H son counties ot east central Missouri H and from Cole, Morgan, and Miller H counties, In the center ot the State. ( H Practically all the barytes, locally j known as "tiff," Is mined from shall H low Blinds and open cuts -In the. resl-B resl-B dual clay. H Two districts In eastern Tennesseo H contain Important doposlts ot barlto. The French Broad district, on thej North Carolina' line, south and a lit-M lit-M tie ciiut of Kuoxville, includes uarw H- tit Cocko and Sovlor counties. Ovlng to lack ot transportation tho veins in, M ibis region have not been extensive- ly worked. In tho Sweotvyater dls- trlct Including parts of London, Mc- Minn, and Monroe counties, centering about Sweetwater, there, has been ex- tensive development and a consider- able production ot barytes In the past. H In VlrglnlaTwyUm occurs in three unlike areas in the red sandstone jH and shale series ot the Trlasslo; in jtr tne old crystalline -jaetamorphlc rocks, particularly in the Piedmont crystalline limestone area; and In the valley region of faulted and fold- ed Cambrian and Ordovlclan lime- atones. The deposits In tho Trlasslo . red sandstones ot Prince -William county, In the northeastern part of the State, are ot llttlo importance at Present, though they havo been Intor- mlttcntly worked slnco 1845, Tne karyto deposits ot Bodford. Campbell "id Pittsylvania 'countlos, in the -H south central part ot tho State, con-j con-j teied about Evlngton .and Toshes, are in highly altered crystalline rocks formed'from 'old sedimentary and Igneous rocks. Barlto lias been found associated", with similar rocks. In six other counties In the Piedmont region, but hag'riot been mined to-any to-any "considerable extent. In south western, Virginia In Tazewell, Wythe, Russell and Smyth counties, barlte occurs oc-curs In tho Cambrian and Ordovlclan limestones or their residual clay. Deposits of barytes are known In Mariposa county in California; in Clark, Elko, Mineral, and Nyo counties, coun-ties, in Nevada; in Blalno county, in Idaho; and In Alaska. Most of the deposits In the Western States are undeveloped, as there has apparently been a scanty market for this material mater-ial In that region, and railroad freight rates have not permitted western barite ba-rite to compete with either foreign or domestic barlte in the principal centers of use in tho East. In 1913 E. F. Burchard, ot tho United States Geological Survey, discovered a con slderable deposit ot barlto assdclated with quartette schists on Castlo Island, Isl-and, In the Duncan Canal, 40 miles northwest ot Wrangell, In southeastern southeas-tern Alaska. A copy of tho annual report on barytes may be obtained freo on application ap-plication to tho Director of tho Geological Geo-logical Survey, Washington, D. C. |
