Show " A Yard oiHeal LMited by tho Executive Secretary Sec-retary of tho Utah Public Pub-lic Health Assn. Now that the state department of education has adopted the modern health crusadu and made it a patt of the school curriculum. I think it might bo a splendid thing If the peo-pcl peo-pcl of Utah know more about tho crusado and tho health choics which the children do. In the first place tho crusade appeals ap-peals to tho Imagination of tho child and through this appeal tho boy 01 i will do tho llttlo simple things, jcIi as keeping hands and faco and neck clean, brushing teeth, etc with out objection, whoio fotmetly It was a real Job to get them done: And they wash thoroughly now, for they know they will get no advancement buttons or pins unless they ate teal-ly teal-ly clean. "Here Is the list of tho chores which tho chlldten nro required to do: 1 I washed by hunds before each meal today. 2. I washed not only my face hut my ears and neck and I cleaned my finger nails today. 3. I tried today to keep fingers, pencils and everything that might be unclean out of my mouth and nose. A. I drank a glass of water befoio each meal and before going to bed, and drank no tea, coffee nor other Injurious drinks today. 5. 1 brushed my teeth thoroughly in the morning nnd In the evening today. 6. I took ten or, more slow deep bi earths of fresh air today. ,, ?.' I played outdoors or with windows win-dows open more than thirty minutes today. 8. I was In bed ten hours or moro last night and kept my window open. 9. I tried today to sit up and stand up straight to eat slowly and to attend to toilet and each need of my body at its tegular time. 10. I tried today to keop neat and cheerful constantly nnd to be helpful to others. 11. I took a full bath on each day of tho weok that is checked (X). Total number of chores done each day Boys and girh thirteen jears of ago jnay change this to "nlno hours" Thoso under nlno years should havo oleven hours sleep at least. I wonder how many of thoso who read tills live up to these chores For the child they are going to be so taught in tho schools that Instead of being chotes they will be hnblts. Foi tho older pooplo who do not practice them It would bo a great help to niako them a pait of the dally life. The Utah Public Health association will gladly furnish fieo of charge llteraturo on the Modern Health Crusade Cru-sade to anyone In the state of Utah. A few days ago n young man came Into my office and asked me whether I had any llteratuie on tho relation of climate to tuberculosis. Such literature lit-erature was available and I gave It to the young man at once. Intscad of going out ho stood a moment diffidently dif-fidently and then asked mo frankly for my opinion on the case of a very dear friend. I did not ask who it was ptobably his brother but asked ask-ed a few questions. Tho joung man In question has tuberculosis tu-berculosis In Its early stages. He has been examined by two physicians nnd both of them pronounced It tuberculosis. tuber-culosis. One has urged the youth to go to Arizona and the othor has advised ad-vised him to stay In Salt Lako City and fight It out. My caller asked mo what I would ndvlse. I told him I was not u physician, physi-cian, but that I would certainly let him havo my opinion, as executive of tho Utah Public Health Association. Then I asked him If tho young man had a back yard at homo in which ho could sleep. If he had parents, here. If ho would listen to common-sense common-sense advice. To all theso question? tho unsuois were In tho aillrmatlvo. Knowing these things I then told my visitor that If tho oung man wna my bi other I would certainly odvlso him to stay at homo. In tho flist placo cymntu does not niako a great deal of difference If tho patlonf 1 ,( knows how to live In the placo wheie he Is locnted. I told tho youth In my olllco that the other could llvu in a tent light In Salt Lako as well as In any other place and having 'tho great advantages of living at home, having iovlnj; care, good food and no worry about his folks, the chances chanc-es for u quick arrest In his case were much greater than they would bo away' from home. So many, people, finding they have tuberculosis Immediately go Into a kind ot hysteria and. think that they must get away from their own home. Much of, that is sheer nonsense. Rest good plain food, well cooked not fried fresh air all the time aud double doses of common sense, are the big cures, for tuberculosis. Oo-Ing Oo-Ing away Is an expensive propaltlon. For tho advanced cases It often Is the only thing that will save a life, but for one with only an Incipient case tho chances are all In his favor If he stays at homo. And so I told my caller to tell his friend that In my opinion ho was in no need of going away, but could bo made well right In town. Then I urged him to impress on the other that the fight for recoveiy from tu-betculoals tu-betculoals calls for courage courago of the highest ordor. It takes courage cour-age to fight all the time, to hold joursolf In from hard exercise, to stay in nights and rest when you would like to bo out with tho crowd but it Is absolutely neccssaiy. You must rest. You can do your day's work, pot haps without harm, but after af-ter that theto must be rest, long hours of rest. So fight the fight and help yourself win. Tho Utah Public Health association associa-tion Is working right along these linos nnd Is willing to cooperate at any tlino with llteraturo or1 In other wnya with anyone In the state. m |
