Sharp criticism developed in the House In connection with the sundry sun-dry civil bill over alleged excessive payment of attorneys fees authorized authoriz-ed by A. Mitchell Palmer, now attorney at-torney general, when ho was alien property custodian. Representative Good, chairman or tho appropriations committee and 'Representative Walsh of Massachusetts Massachus-etts questioned the payment of a. fee of $in,000 to former liepresentatlvo liepresen-tatlvo J. Harry Covington, Democrat, r Marylond .and Frank L. Crocker, n Washington nttornoy of $10,000 for acting as attorneys for certain chemical companies over which tho alien property custodian exercised a, control. Mr. Good pointed out that shortly before the $15,000 fee was paid lo Mr. Covington he had resigned as Judge of the Supremo cottit of the District of Columbia at a snlary of $6000 a year. Mr. Good intimated that payment of the fee was open to Investigation. |
