Show W F I j WHY SHERLEY WAS DEFEATED - The New York Times mourns and refuses re-fuses to be comforted over the defeat of Representative Swager Sherley of Louis ivlle, chairman of the House Committee von Appropriations, for re-election. The Times declares that he must have Been beaten because of his refusal to get appropriations ap-propriations for his locality. The truth is that the United States treasury was; worked to the limit to make Sherley iid" -and pogaiblythe thing was overdone, over-done, the people wondering what was going go-ing to be the limit of the outpouring of federal funds. Within twenty-five miles of Louisville three great federal camps were located, involving a total expenditure expendi-ture of more than fifty million dollars, tfhe report of an army board in favor qf a site in Indiana for the cantonment to be used by Indiana and Kentucky conscript con-script troops was overridden, the army post near Indianapolis was , practically , .abandoned, and constructionnvas begun j) in and about Louisville which is estimat-ttt estimat-ttt it will, take more than two years to complete. It was in spite of all this' that Mr; Sherley was defeated. Instead of being be-ing evidence of his failure to utilize his position to strengthen himself, it proved conclusvely .that such a program does not always bring the expected results.
