Show Wm, FJLOATING WORKERS mm t Few induatde0 are ftble'W cut loose en- ' BBBBBsPfflO! tirely from tramp labor. In the newspa-pcP newspa-pcP game the tramp printer has been a characteristic, type. The foreman may curse him and all of his works and ways, and swears he will never tolerate his red and unshorn face again Yet when rush times come, with jobs piling up and the customers pawing the earth, anything on two legs that can set up a stickful of type looks good. Many of these fellows are very plaus ible. When thoroughly sobered offend provided with a shave and clean linen,, they may be fairly impressive. Frequently Frequent-ly they are men of some education, and would have climbed well in life but for the fatal curse of drink. Munition plants have been handicapped handicap-ped by men who take a job and then stay but a few days or weeks. Not all these fellows are drunkards. Many of them are simply victims of their own irresolution, easily turned aside from their purposes by slight annoyances or discomforts. New Jersey is trying to get at the floating labor nuisance, by requiring laborers la-borers to obtain employment under a card system. Applicants for work, are required to present cards issued by the state, federal, and municipal employment employ-ment bureaus, showing where they last worked and why they left. The employer who condemns a man except for grave reason might have it in his power to ruin a man's chances for . finding work. Employment bureaus must' see that, justice is done to every honest and well meaning worker no matter how humble. But in most cases a faithful man would et his recommendation without trouble. Floating laborers of the chron ic type should learn that their vagrant habits are very unprofitable to themselves them-selves as well as to the community. A ft |
