Show Frank Price Of Wellsville Wants To Resign. Republican To Be Sued Farmer Frank Price, of Wellsville, was in Logan Saturday and called at this office and informed us that he was one of the many farmers of this valley who had leased his land for beet raising. The contract con-tract had been entered into a year or so ago and had some time yet to run. Incident to war condition he finds prices going up, and in order to make ends meet he ought to get more for the land. In fact he says it would be only fair for him to get more for the land for the simple reason that the lessee is getting a great deal more for the product. Mr. Price then said, "Now J want to resign from this contract and make another that will raise my rent" Of course we saw the point in an instant, but unfortunately for Mr. Price he is not a public official. He is just a common, ordinary, honest farmer who is in duty bound to live up to his contracts. In Cache County our Sheriff, Clerk, Treasurer, and Attorney have conspired with the Commissioners and found a way to evade the law, and thereby have their salaries raised, but farmer Price, and the many that are in his condil n, cannot do so. They cannot do so for many reasons, first, because it is contrary to law und he and they have a decent respect for law; second, because the public would not stand for it should an attempt be made to set the law aside, and third, because, be-cause, farmer Price, and all other farmers enter into contracts with people to be lived up to, and not to be set aside until fulfilled or cancelled by mutual cohsent. ;we suggested to Mr. Price that he do not despair, bijt to lay his case before the county commissioners, and perhaps they could find a way whereby he might qVade, or set aside the law, so that he could extricate himself from his present contracts, or even Attorney Gardner, who is undoubtedly well versed in all the ' ' crooks and turns whereby individuals, as well as officials, offi-cials, may do that which the law plainly says they shall not do, might help him, but the husky farmer shook his head and said he thought they were all too busy looking after their own cases, which reminded us of the prospective movement to raise the salaries of the commissioners themselves. In order to do it it is suggested that one resign at a time ..ie other two accepting the resignation, and appointing at a higher high-er salary, until all three have been cared for. It would not take much time, the commissioners are worthy, their salaries are low and if the law can be set aside In one case it can in anoth er, so why not? 'One thing of manifest importance in this whole affair is the estimate of the commissioners as to ability. It will be remembered sonic four years ago Attorney A. E. Bowen defeated Attorney John A. Sneddon. Mr. Bowen was the only Republican elected, elect-ed, and for some reason he was not deemed to be worth as much as Mr. Sneddon and his salary was reduced .$100 or more. Mr. Gardner, who of course, is a democrat, and which may count in the fcale of ability, succeeded Mr. Bowen, and his salary must lie raised, even though it be necessary to set the law aside. Such is the verdict of these experts as to ability. Incidentally we learn that The Republican is to be sued for libel. It is claimed that our insinuation that a conspiracy was entered into is libel, and that we would have some trouble in proving it. We shall be tickled to death to answer to such a suit. In fact not less than ten wealthy farmers have offered to assist us in any expense attachced thereto. In fact, farmer 'Price, who wants to resign from his contracts, says out of his small earnings he will try and donate a few dollars to assist us. |
