Show The Public Is Doing A Little Sleuthing In Up matter of the six p'clock closing agreement-on agreement-on the part of the merchants it comes to us that the public has taken it upon itself to see that the rule is strictly obeyed, and in. accordance therewith a representative repre-sentative of the patriotic public started out on a little sleuthing trip a few nights ago. Waiting until about fifteen minutes af ter.six o'clock when the door was locked and the blinds drawn, this representative of a patriotic public turned the lock at the door of one of our business houses and tried to enter. Finding Find-ing the store olosed a hard knock on the door followed follow-ed and some one on the inside peered through the glass door. The patron beckoned for the door to be opened which was complied with when it was related re-lated that it would be an accommodation if a small purchase could be made, as it would be inconvenient to do so the next day, and six o'clock had crept around before it had been expected. The patron was admitted admit-ted with good grace and at once was shown the goods desired, whereupon the storekeeper was told to place them back on the shelves as they were not wanted, and the purpose of the venture was just to see how the rule was being obeyed, and if the storekeeper expected ex-pected any further patronage, from that source it would be necessary for him to like up to his agreements agree-ments strictly with his fellow merchants. Sadly humiliated, but a much wiser man, this merchant mer-chant has learned a lesson that he will not soon forget, for-get, und as the public are getting the entire spirit of the war into their systems, it well behooves us all to live up strictly to any and all agreements that we make. This is just a little agreement that can so easily be lived up to without any sacrifice on our part that there ought not to be anymore quibbling or difficulty dif-ficulty in securing a strictly practical observance of the rule. f |
