Show Old Public Lotteries. Harvard was aided by a lottery in 17S9 by a spoclal act. Tho scheme was to buy Joseph Pope's orrery for tho college. Threo thousand tickets at $20 each woro sold. Tho plan was successful, and after all expenses had been paid Harvard had tho orrery and ?400 In tho schopl treasury. Among tho publlp buildings erected In America Amer-ica by tho aid of lotteries Fanoull hall, In Boston, has tho most historical Interest. In-terest. Tho hall burned In 1761 and then tho soloctmon of Boston woro Instructed at a town mooting to petition peti-tion tho general court to empower a sultablo person to ralso by way of lottery such a sum of money as would bo sufficient for tho rebuilding of tho hall. Tho legislature granted tho potltion, and tho profits of tho lotteries, lot-teries, which extended to 17G4, were applied to tho erection of the second Fanoull hall, which hold tho town meetings of tho Revolution and still stands. In 1833 an act was passed which put an end to tho sale of lottery tickets in Massachusetts. |
