(lisailvantHge. Some time ago her family urged her to relinquish newspaper news-paper wotlc, but she was anxious 'to found out n literary career to, make a name for herself In the annals of letters. Only last week sho discussed with one or the editorial staff nn article ar-ticle which she was planning to offer to an eastern magazine. Of late sho had been troubled with insomnia, say members of her family, and there Is corroborative evidence of this fact. Last Tuesday Miss l'alne was notified noti-fied by Mr. Drown that her services would be no longer required. Hut she was told thnt the order would not become be-come effective for a month, during which time she would no doubt find .mother position. And assistance In the search for other work wns lent. On Thursday, two days later, she was In good spirits, and that evening she attended a theater, returned to the office, failed to write the usual criticism, and went home. Tho next morning her lifeless body was found In the waters ot tho lake. The family of Miss l'alne has no hesitancy In attributing her rnsh acts to a mental derangement' brought on presumably by overwork and by the knowledge that she wns soon to loso her position. Members of the family stated to The Herald-llopubllcan yesterday yes-terday In unequivocal terms, that Miss l'alne was undouhtely Insane when she wrote the accusing letter, and when she committed suicide. They had noticed Indications ot derangement de-rangement for some dnys prior to that timo. They believe In her chastity, and they have no reason to bellovo otherwise. Yesterday the family attorney at-torney wont over all tho facts In tho case, and his verdict, given to members mem-bers of the l'alne family, was that there was no question that the woman wom-an had written tho letter In a fit of temporary Insanity. The horrible effect of the published letter upon the family has added a bereavement quite as poignant ns tho death Itself, but the bereuved ones uro ns certain In their confldoncc In this moral Integrity of tho dead woman wom-an as Tho Ilerald-Uopubllcun Is secure se-cure In Its belief of the moral'clean-lincss moral'clean-lincss of Miss l'alne and the innocence inno-cence of Mr. Drown. Brown Makes Statement. A signed statement wus also issued by Mr. Drown, editor of the Herald-Republican Herald-Republican who was accused In Miss I'aine's letter to . K. McGurrlu of causing caus-ing her ruin. Tho statement Is as lollows: The charges are unequivocally raise of course. In my rulutlous with Miss l'alne at The Herald-Hepubllcan of-lice of-lice and they never extended beyond 1 always knew her to be a woman of high moral character, a woman whose very life was tho personification personifica-tion of purity. Sho wns terribly In earnest with her work and when early ear-ly this week 1 gave her notice that I would have to dispense with her services, I also told her that she would be employed for a month longer, lon-ger, during which time she could look for other work. I tried to find n new position for her. The letter sho left has been and is inexplicable, it is no doubt the creation crea-tion of a deranged mind, which may havo been caused to certain extent by tho Impending loss of her position. I am absolutely guiltless of any charge of Immorality lodged against me. and my sympathies in this matter mat-ter are with the bereaved family of Miss l'alne. (Igned.) AKTHUK J. DUOWW. K. H. Calllstor, a director of the paper, pa-per, gave out the following statement: The Herald Republican directors have not taken any conclusive action in tho matter. I am not convicting anyone any-one on what I consider to be the statements state-ments of a mentally deranged person, I have never scon anything In the conduct or either Mr. Drown or Miss l'alne that would warrant even a suspicion sus-picion of the charge made. Miss l'nlno's statement In her postscript post-script that Mr. Drown was "responsible "responsi-ble for all those Indccencols In tho paper that shut It out of so many homes," no doubt means tho stockado question. Tho fact Is that Mr. Drown wns In Pittsburg. Pa., during tho major ma-jor portion of tho discussion referred to, being nbsent from this statu for a whole month at that timo. Further, Sir. Drown Is not and has not been responsible for the policy or the tier-ald-llopubllcun u ract well known to Miss Paine when In her normal mental men-tal condition. Personally I have no apology to offer for tho Herald-Hcpub-Mean's jiollcy, and am not aware of Its having been shut out of any homo for Ita straightforward, fearless course Thofact that a week ago Mr. Drown gave Miss Palno 30 days' notice to seek Vriother position doubtlcw prey ed upon her mind. K. H. CALMBTKIl. This mornlug tho Herald-Republican goes to considerable length lu Its treatment of certain phases of the case, nnd publishes statements mado by members of tho staff In which they express their conviction thnt Miss Paine wns the victim of n disordered brain, that she was Insnne, and their belief In the Innocence of Ilrown. o |
