Indignant over an attempt of tho Bell Telephone company com-pany this morning to raise Its rates throughout the Tintlc district, '200 business men Of Eureka passed resolutions- at n mass meeting here tonight to-night serving notice upon the company com-pany that unless tho increase is can celled the telephones will be WKen fiom every business house and residence resi-dence in this district and a new Independent Inde-pendent company organized at once for local service. Committees were appointed ap-pointed to probe the local telephone situation and to report on the probable prob-able cost of an Independent system-. Notice of Increase from S3 a month to S3 a month for business phones nnd from S2 a month to S3 a month for residence phones, individual service, ser-vice, was made by the local branch office of-fice of the Bell compnny early this morning. The arrival of the morning mall containing tho notices was the signal for what appeared to be a pre arranged plan of action. Before noon a mass meeting had been called and the proposed raise was the sole topic of conversation on the streets. It follows: "Be It resolved that the citizens and business men of Tintlc are unalterably unalter-ably opposed to any raise whatsoever of telephone rates by the Bell Telephone Tele-phone company, which has recently taken over the business and lines of the Independent Telephone company In Utah; that we are willing .to continue con-tinue the service of tho Bell company com-pany provided we are given tho same rates as wero In effect previous to tne building of the Independent plant In this city and that any effort to raise the rates above those figures shall result re-sult In the removal of telephones from the business houses and residences of Tintlc and the Installation of an Independent Inde-pendent local 'system." ..Being lu the mood to assert their rights the business men also decided to look Into the telephone rates between be-tween Tintlc points and Salt Lake, which they declared aro beyond reason, rea-son, mid to tuke such action oh Is fcund necessary to protect themselves against outrageous tolls.
