Show Democrats Deal with American Party. "TRUTH," Salt Lake. Some days ago Truth published the fact, and It is a fact, that cx-Scnalor Cannon deserted the democratic party par-ty and Joined the new "American" aggregation of soreheads In accordance accord-ance with an arrangement made between be-tween Senator Cannon andthc"Amcr-Ican" andthc"Amcr-Ican" party leaders as parties of the Hist part and the democratic national committee as party of the second part. The publication of that fact greatly annoyed ThcTribuncthc K.K. organ, the Herald, assistant K. K. organ and quasi-democratic oigan, Mr. Cannon and a few of the leading democrats. They lashed themselves into fury and tho foam was seattcied far and wide. The two organs and the senator came out with denials and abuse of State Chairman Spry of the republican committee. com-mittee. Statements pin porting to be made by Mr. Hambergcr, democratic state chairman, and Mr. Peery, dcmociatlc dcmo-ciatlc national committeeman, weie also published, but the statements of those gentleman as published denied nothing except that they were parties to the deal. That such a deal was made Truth Is In a position to state positively, and does so right now. Tlie deal was not made direct witli tlie national democratic committee. It was made by Senator Gorman and William Sheehan on behalf of the na-1 tlonal democratic committee. There , Is the technicality upon which the oigans base their denials. Truth did not get lis original information on this matter from Chairman Spry. Neither did Mr. Spry furnish us with the fact that the deal was made thiough Gorman and Sheehan when Senator Gorman was In the east ie-cently. ie-cently. The wrath of the organs hurled against Mr. Spry and ilielr attempts at-tempts to father the statement on him weie entirely misdirected. The Tribune may go Into spasms In maK-ing maK-ing denials, the Herald may rant and rave, and Mr. Cannon may belch forth denials until he is black in the face. We know whereof we speak and we know that the nefarious deal was made as we have stated. The inducement for the democratic national committee to make such a deal Is evident. The only hope of the democrats to defeat President Roosevelt Roose-velt in this state is In the"Amerlcan" party. Their plain course, like that of the local democracy, Is to aid and abet the new party, In the hope that it will draw icpubllcan votes away from the regular republican ticket. Kearns and the leaders of t!:c new party In this respect are in sympathy with the democrats. Senator Cannon for months has been a defender of Kearns, the originator and the head and front of the "American" party. All his efforts were In that direction even when he was still within the democratic ranks. It was decided that Mr. Cannon could be of more scr-1 vice to the "Ameiicans" and more ef-j fectually aid Mr. Keains in getting his revenge on the republicans by join-' Ing the "American" party than by re- j maining even nominally a democrat. I Mr. Cannon, for some considerations, was induced to play the part of a certain cer-tain man In holy writ who lived In the ' time of Christ and who came to a bad end. After Mr. Cannon had consummated consum-mated the deal witli tho democratic national committee, he telegraphed the "American" party leadeis here that he was with them and about tlie same time or a little after he telegraphed tele-graphed the democrats of I'tah to get together and stay together. The K. ! K. paity here had two objects In gel-' ting Cannon to Join them in a drama-1 tic and spectacular way, first, to defeat de-feat the republican ticket, and second ' to Incicase anti-Mormon sentiment in I the cast and strengthen the opposition opposi-tion to Senator Sinoot keeping his seat in the United States senate: Cannon, Can-non, It was thought, would be a great caid. Ho Is a Mormon of a most dis tinguished family and parentage, an i effective and dramatic speaker who I could be used effectively in the cam-1 palgn. Koth th" K. K. leaders and! the dcmociatlc committee, howewr, weie gold bricked. The acquisition! of Mr. Cannon has done the "Ameri-i can" party no good. His talk In the theater on the occasion of ihe American" Amer-ican" party's convention gave tne party par-ty a decided set-back and disgusted decent and real republicans with the movement, the main object of which, the dih-.u of Koosowltind Fairbanks, Mr. Cannon made very evident. This speech was the natuial and planned result of Mr. Cannon's arrangement with tlie democratic national leaders to hurt the republican ticket here by making It appear that President Roosevelt is in league witli the Mor-! mon church. |
