Show THE GREAT WEST. Why Is It that the people of the East do not turn their eyes westward? People In the east talk of the richness of the valley of tho Nile: they. talk about the diamond mines of Africa; the possibilities of China under civilization, civili-zation, yet the west t6day is at Its very beginning. The valley of the Nile is nothing compared to the valley of the Mississippi. That Is the greatest great-est and richest valley on earth. It, ex-tends ex-tends from the Alleghanles to the Rockies, and its resources arc billions. The corn crop raised there brings in almost a billion dollars a year. A largo part of our cotton comes from there, and it is a beehive of mining and manufacturing Industry. We are adding enormously to tho west by the new Irrigation works now going on. Take California. It Is half again as big as Italy, and it will raise the same products and feed as many people. Nevertheless it has now only a million and a half population, while Italy has thirty-two millions. The irrigation works of California will bring In a vast area of new land. This is so in many otner states. Take Utah. It is larger than a half dozen eastern states with millions of people, and almost Incomparable In richness. Our valleys produce crops unequalled in most states, our mines arc among the richest, our water and climate the purest and best. There arc 275,000 people In Utah and our resources re-sources would support 20,000,000. And then take Texas. That state could feed this whole country and raise enough cotton to clothe our people peo-ple for all time to come. The west has hardly begun to be. At present 00 per cent of our people live east of the Missouri river. We can support six times as many west of that river. |
