Show FRANKLIN CONFERENCE Apostle Lyman Argues For Greater Liberalty. Aug. 20, 1001. The quarterly conference which was held In Franklin on the 14 and 15th, Inst., were held in the grove of trees on the south side of the meeting house. Preparations were mado for the occasion by the Bishop and council, coun-cil, and their aids, by erecting stands for the speakers and the choir, and raised seats for the -audience, also chairs and benches. Indeed the place was well arranged 'for holding conference. confer-ence. The people commenced gathering gather-ing early and at the time-for opening the meeting a good many were thtre. On the stand were the presidency of the Stake, Ajostlc Francis M. Lyman, W. C. Parkinson, president of the II y-rum y-rum Stake, and Prof. Robinson, of Logan, Lo-gan, also members of tho High council and tho Bishops. Conference was presided pre-sided over by Pres. George C.Parkinson. C.Parkin-son. Meeting commenced by the choir singing "Comecome yo Saints," the congregation joining in the singing. Prayer was oirercd by Bishop Hatch, afterwhtch Prcs. Parkinson arose and said that he was much pleased to sec so many present at the opening of our conference, welcomed all and hoped that we would have a good time together to-gether during the conference; piayed the Lord to bless us and those who will speak during tho conference' with His Holy Spirit that they may give us good counsel and that we may bo willing will-ing to receive tho same from the servants ser-vants of God who have come to visit us. He then called upon some of tl)o Bishops of the wards to report the condition of their respective wards, and favorable reports were given. President Lyman arose and said he was very much pleased with tho people peo-ple of Oneida Stake. Was pleased to witness the preparations that had been mado for holding our conference In the open air where we can enjoy tho pure air of heaven. Gave credit to tho Bishops and council and the people of Franklin for their efforts In arranging such good accommodations for holding our meetings under the shado of tho ticcs. He said that It has been a long time since he had visited tho Oneida Stake and probably It will be a long time beforo he will como again. Congratulated Con-gratulated tho Saints for tho Improvement Improve-ment that they have mado in the Stake since ho was here before. Hoped Hop-ed they would still continue to improve. im-prove. Said that thero were a few items that ho wntul to speak upon: First "the dutn of tho lesser priesthood." priest-hood." Spjko considerably on tho subject and" gave excellent Instruction concerning their duties. Also spok on our duties towards those that dwell among us who aro not of our faith. Wc ought to treat them kindly and provo to them by our actions that wo aro their friends. Most of them who have made their homes among us are good neighbors, they aro honest, good pcoplo, though they do not believe be-lieve as wo do. They mingle with us, do business with us and when help is wanted, cither to build houses of worship wor-ship or schoolhouscs and halls of amusements, hardly any of them refuse re-fuse a helping hand. Then let us show to them that wo aro their friends and not their enemies. Let us visit them, and show them the beauties of the gospel and try and win them to the truth. They hae come here to live among us and want to stay with us; then let usdo to them as wc would hae them to do to us. Prayed the Lord to bless us. The choir sang and benediction was offered. Adjourned until 2 o'clock. In the afternoon meeting a gicat many more were present. More bishops reported their wards. Prcs. W. C. Parkinson, of the Hyriiin Stako spoke a short time. Was much pleased to meet ith the people of Oneida Stake. In conference in Franklin, the town that he had been raised In from ills boyhood. Said lie loved the truth which was tauglittohlm in his boyhood boy-hood by his parents and ho still loves It and hoped to be truo to Its laws to to the end. Prcs. Lyman spoke again mostly on the same subject as In tho morning. Indeed we had a feast of fat things, good, fatherly advice from 1'rcs. Lyman Ly-man and tin spirit .or God. was with us. Tho conreicnce adjourned until 10 o'clock Monday morning. Prcs.- Lyman spoke at conjoint meeting In the evening. Monday meeting commenced at 10 o'clock and a good number present. We had good meetings during the two days and the spirit or God was with us. Conference adjourned for three months to meet In Prcson. We have had considerable rain lately late-ly and some heavy grain is down Hat. Wc have somo sickness in our midst at present. Mr. W. Bennett and Mrs. Henrietta Porter are both very ill. The farmers are busy cutting their second crop of hay and also cutting grain. Threshing has commenced' Three threshers working now and more will be running foou. |
