Show TAILS WERE ALL THERE. Wily Greek Duteher Complied with the Regulations. A funny story Is told about an army meat purveyor In tho Ionian Islands: A favorite device In certain stations abroad was to palm off goat flesh for mutton. A zealous quartermaster in tho Ionian Islands, suspecting this prnctlco on a certain occasion, thought ho would assuredly defeat It by ordering order-ing that all the legs of mutton sent In by tho butchers should havo tho talis attached. Tho Greek contractor smiled knowingly, but promised compllnnco, and for tho next few days every Joint was delivered In tho manner required. Tho quality of tho meat, howover, did not Improve; on tho contrary, It had a more "goaty" flavor than ever, nnd loud and bitter wero tho complaints of its consumers. At last tho mystery was solved. One day, when tho Inspecting In-specting ofllcer picked up n leg of mutton to weigh It, tho Joint fell to tho ground, leaving the tall In his hand. Subsequent Investigation showed that It had merely been sown on with a thread. |
