During tho entire six months of the contest the tluec schools mentioned wciu seldom 1,000 votes apait, and at tho tlnlsh there was a decided element of doubt as to which would be the winner. The ballot bo wasrlosod piomptly at seven, and Messrs. llerschel Bullcn Jr., W. O. Hoblnson and Prof. I. K. Smith, the tluec lnleicstcd parties cast up the votes. Mr. Bullcn was the llrst to give up, taking Prof. Smith by the hand and saying "it's like Uooscvclt's election, merely a question of majoilty." And it turned 'out that way. Prof. Smith was highly pleased at tho vlctoiy of his school, and has Just leason to be. The piano Is one of the Thatcher Music Co, 's best, a Schiller of beautiful case and tone, and will prove it valuable addition to the Academy, which was probably In greater need of such an instrument than either of tho other contestants. That the little school on First West should have won against such formidable formid-able rivals as the B. Y. C. and Benson is something of a surprise and many aic the theories advanced as lo how It was done, but to ceaseless energy may be attributed the success. To Miss Kathrlne Smith, preceptress of the school, now In the tho East, may be given a great deal of the credit, for at no time did she relax In her endeavor en-deavor to rustle votes. Tho vanquished accepted their defeat de-feat gracerully, and the lcprescnta-tlvcs lcprescnta-tlvcs of tho two nearest' expiesscd to" Prof. Smith their admiration and best, wishes, and all congratulated Mr. Hayball on the way' the contest was conducted. It seems to have been absolutely fair in eveiy paitlculai. Astowhcthei the scheme has been piolltablc to the 111 in giving away the piano, one needs but cast up the total number of votes and consider the volume vol-ume of business necess.ii) to secure that number. |
