Show J WORLD'S FAIR FAR BEYOND EXPECTATIONS r Verdict of a New York Writer Who Spent a Week at the ? K 5 Exposition at St. Louis in July. I Tho World's Fair at SL Louis is now In t'io midst of Its splendid season. sea-son. Colossal, completo, cosmopolitan, cosmopoli-tan, It commands tho attention of tho world as no other cnterpriso of tho present year. From all nations thcro aro pilgrims coming to this shrine, and from nil our states nnd territories tbero Is a constantly growing throng ot visitors. United States Senators, Governors of States, men eminent In eclenco, art and letters all express unqualified admiration for tho Exposition Exposi-tion and freo acqttlcsccnco In tho oft-ropcatcd oft-ropcatcd statement that this Is by far tho greatest and best universal exposition expo-sition ever held. During July a well-known magazine and newspaper writer from Now York, Mr. Addison Steele, spent n week at tho World's Fair, Inspecting tho grounds, buildings and various attractions attrac-tions as thoroughly as was posslblo In that limited period. Returning home, Mr. Stcclo published In Brooklyn Llfo tho following appreciative comments com-ments on tho Exposition: In tho expressive languago of tho cay, St. Louis "has tho goods." I had expected much of tho Louisiana Purchase Pur-chase Exposition, for I had kept In touch with tho making of It from Its very Inception, llvo years ago; but nftor nearly a weok of Journeying through this new wonderland I must confess that In overy essontlal particular par-ticular It Is far beyond my expectations. expecta-tions. Tho biggest nnd best It was meant to bo and tho biggest and best it Is. Tho exposition, rumors notwithstanding, notwith-standing, is qulto finished. Ono ot the greatest, and certainly ono of tho most agreeable, of ray many surprises was tho extreme beauty of the main group ot buildings. For the slmplo reason that tho camera does not exist which could tako In the vast picture as the oyo sees It, tho oarly vlows of tho group a bit hero and a bit thcro gavo a scant idea of tho schomo as a wholo. Nor did tho early vlows of tho ton Individual buildings which mako up Its corapon- ent parts do Justice to their nobility of architecture and general grandeur. Then again In tho ground pians and blrd's-oyo sketches tho only posslblo manner of showing It tho tan-shaped arrangement of this group' looked stiff and unsatisfying. Far from that, It Is quito as rcmarkablo In Its way as tho famous Court ot Honor of tho Columbian Colum-bian Exposition. In ono respect It la even moro notable, for instead of two grand vistas it offers a dozen. Tho main vista Is, of course, tho ono looking look-ing up tho Plaza of St. Louis whoso crowning feature Is the great Louisiana Louisi-ana Purchaso Monument and across tho Grand Basin to tho Cascado Gardens. Gar-dens. On tho right nro the Varied Industries In-dustries and Electricity buildings and on tho left Manufacturers and Education, Edu-cation, theso with Transportation nnd Machinery still further to tho right and Liberal Arts and Mines boyond nt tho loft making up tho body of tho fan. For Its hnndlo tho fan has tho Cascado Gardens rising In a grand terraco to a height of sixty-five feet abovo tho floor lovel of tho buildings mcntlonod nnd crowned by tho great Festival Hall, tho Terraco of States nnd tho East and West Pavilions and tho Flno Arts building directly behind. The Plko has In tho Tyrolean Alps tho finest concession that I havo over Been. Thero is a great squaro with many quaint buildings, a little village ttrcct, and abovo tho snow-clad mountains moun-tains which look very real as the v V M VV m h H V V B B B 1 & H 4 H: K WT, 4Vf btbi iIIbI jbbH 1x1 hm 1-PfS 1 B Bfli JbB bbI bbI BB. Tho best scenic railroad rail-road yet dovlscd affords soveral flno glimpses of tho Alps nnd thoro Is a very graphic exposition of tho Ober-ammergau Ober-ammergau passion play In the little church. The Cliff Dwellers' concession conces-sion also looks very realistic at nightfall. night-fall. It Is elaborate In arrangement and tho courting, snako and other dances by tho Southwestern Indians mako It another of tho Plko shows which should bo taken In by all. In Seville thoro is an amusing marionette theator and somo gcnulno Spanish dancing. For tho rest tho Plko offers lr.flnlto variety, and as a rule tho full money's worth Is given. Tho enormous enor-mous Jerusalem and Boer War concessions con-cessions aro not on tho Plko, It Is a caso of dlno at tho German Pavilion nnd dlo at tho exposition. In a beautiful Modcrno Kunst building adjoining Das Dcutscho Haus tho best fcod and tho highest prices on the grounds aro to bo found, tho table d'hoto lunch and dinner costing two and threo dollars, respectively. I H tried nlno of them and nowhero found Bj the prices moro than thoy ought to be. H As a matter of fact, for neither food I cor lodging no ono need pay any more at SL Louis than ho feels that he can u fiord, and yet bo well fed and housed, It ho will uso ordinary common sense In making a selection out of the nbundanco offered. Hot? Yes, but on tho two hottest days ot the summer at SL Louis I suffered no moro from tho heat than In Now York boforo leaving and after returning.
