Show That electric franchise Kmtou Rki-uiii.ican: The council took up the IE. Mahler franchise, at a special meeting, 1 am told, and postponed post-poned its decision for one week. J desire de-sire to call the attention of the ell. ji .council, business men and citlens to qB-ftf .i few points which, as I view It, aic r or ital importance to our city in granting this franchise. No doubt all faor gianling Mr. Mahler's wishes and would with pleasure plea-sure welcome the completion of the road. As 1 understand ids purpose it is to build a suburban elect lie line from Payson on the South to Logan on the North. As-Piovo, Salt Lake .and Ogdcn now have all the tracks on .tliolr principal stiects they would allow, al-low, it would become necessary .for him to obtain tiack privileges In those towns In order to get through "the center of those towns" which lie proposes pro-poses to do. Those who are acquainted acquaint-ed with the Ins and outs of Logan will at once see the proper and about tho only way to come Into tho city from the South would be on the county joad and up along Main street, say as Xar as Second North. Not far In the .future ho would no doubt Ilnd it to Jiis interest to continue his road to Northern settlements and would use tho entire length of Main street. Should lie place two tracks on tills thoroughfare we would at no time In tho future deshe another. Wo hope to havo an electric railway system over the streets of our city at some fu-JwirJjL fu-JwirJjL turotlme. We want It soon. Our jSvT city owns its' own water system, its electrlo light plant, and having an abundance of electric power might perchance decide to put In her own street railway at some futuie time. If, however, this Is not done, perad- r cnturc some man or company will ask for a franchise to build said desirable desir-able improvement. One thing is certain cer-tain we will hae a street railway system sys-tem In this city befoie "one hundred years," tho length of time asked for in Mr. Mahler's franchise. Whatever other streets might bo used by such a system, we know Center street from the depot and Main street as far as Fourth North leading to the Agricultural Agricul-tural college, would be Indispensable. Mr. Mahler havintr a franchise on Main street, with undoubtedl) two tracks, the public would wantnomore on that street. Accordingly we should now piovlde In the franchise that our city may extend ex-tend to any company deslilng to build a street lallway, Hack privileges over such parts of his road as might be found necessary, biieli privileges and the cost of the same should be provided provid-ed for, and the franchise Include the appointment of committees from the city, Mi. Mahler's toad and any proposed pro-posed stieet lallway company. Allow me to call jour attention to the trackage track-age pilvilege piovided foi by the city of Los Angeles. In that city no company com-pany is glcu an exclusive franchise nor the exclusive rights to use their own track Any company desiring to build a load from some smaller city 01 a lesoit, Is entitled to the privilege of coming into the center of the cilj on tiacksaheady hid, by paying a lea-.so lea-.so liable trackage. Accordingly at the present time there arc subuibau roads from,Mt. Lowe through Pasadena to Los Angeles, also from Ocean Park, twenty miles, and from Long Reach to Los Angeles. Any and all of the cars of these dltferent lines come right into the center and some of them pass through the city on the track of the original street car line. In consequence conse-quence of this Los Angeles is In the center of many smaller cities and towns, all feeders to It and eacli having hav-ing done its part In making of that city a great business center, a beautiful beauti-ful city and one that has giown in population and desiiabllity faster than any city In the West. Certainly inside of "one bundled years" we expect not only to seo this line fiom Pajson but expect to have suburban roads from Picston to Logan; Lo-gan; one from Clarkston through Newton New-ton and Henon to Logan and another from Mcndon to Logan. This valley wlll'bc thickly settled. We can nilse any and ever. thing except tropical fruits Cache valley will support a million people. Let us theicfore look ahead Make piovlslons for the future. fu-ture. J. A. IlKNDUIOKSON. |
