At Wcllsvillo Thursday night safe crackers got in their work at the Co-op, and Farmer's Mercantile Co.and also broke open the Ualdwln saloon. Owing Ow-ing to the fact thai both the Co-op and the Mercantile Co. had deposited with the bank during the day, the burglars got only small amounts of money. At the Co-op $i!0 of the corn pany's money, and 40 deposited there by Postmaster Leathman was secured; at The Farmei's Mercantile Co. $25 was secured. Considerable Damage. At the Farmer's Mercantile Co. the safe crackers used glycerine and blow-cd blow-cd tho safe all to pieces. Fragments of It pierced the celling, tore up fur-nltuie fur-nltuie and disarranged the slock near. When Illsliop Owen, manager of the store, put In his appearance about 7 o'clock lie found the building full of smoke and the rear end a wreck. Tho burglais had entered this stoic with skeleton keys. Muffled Sounds. At the Co-op. the safe crackers had a bigger job on hand and went at It more like experts. This company has a large vault. The burglars knocked olT the combination knob, poured glycerine Into the aperture and after piling shawls and like goods about the affair set off the explosive. This was successful in loosening the door, and then the robbers had to break open the metallic boxes inside. With a large hammer they opened eighteen of these but got only the $.'!0 and $40 mentioned above. The burglars had gained entrance here by the use of skeleton keys also, and they locked the doors again when they left. At The Saloon. Efforts were made to pry open the saloon doors but proved unavailing, and a window was smashed. The place was ransacked but Baldwin always al-ways takes his money home and they secured but $4 or $5, and a small amount of wet goods. Blacksmith Tools. The tools used, such as chisels, hammers, ham-mers, etc., were secured from the Iirenchley blachsmlth shop. As those interested figure It out, the blacksmith shop was visited first, then the saloon, Coop and Farmer's Mercantile Co. Some Clues. Footprints of four men have been traced from the city to the westward and into the hills. The tracks arc made by line shoes, indicating that tho work wa not done by hoboes. Some woman, however, says that about 4 a. in. she saw four men going from the city southward. It Is also true that Peter Maughan, manager of the Co-op, while going to Mcndon at an early hour noticed fresh tracks going go-ing to Wcllsvllle from Mcndon. It is tho. theory of all however, that the men were In close proximity to Wcllsvllle Wclls-vllle late yesterday evening. Are They Railroaders. At one of tho burglarized places a lead pencil bearing the words ."Union Pacific" was found, also a punch on which tho letters "S P." are found. It is said that at Mcndon on Thursday Thurs-day some well dressed strangor Inquired In-quired of a farmer as to the Wcllsvillo mercantile houses, and an excellent description of this man Is In tho possession pos-session of the oillceis. Officers on Trail. At an early hour yesterday morning morn-ing Sheriff Tom Smith was notified of the burglary and immediately went to Wcllsvillo to look into tho matter. The sheriffs at Urlgiam City and Ogden have been notified. Mr. Smith and Commissioner Knowlcs were still i In that vicinity yesterday evening. Burglars too Late. Had the safe crackeis made the effort a day earlier they would have made a pretty fair haul. On Thursday Thurs-day the Co-op banked $100 and the Farmers' Mercantile Co. $l."i(). This leads to the conclusion that no local lights did the Job, as such men would have known when to get In the work. Neltiier stamps, checks, papers nor anything of that kind were taken. Sounds Heard. During the night some people passing pass-ing through the town in a buggy heard the sounds of the explosion but thought It was some one out lato firing fir-ing a cannon cracker. The city has neither electric lights nor a night watchman and every apportuuity for an easy burglary is olfercd. The town Is coslderably excited and those concerned believe that prompt and decisive action, a careful watch, and an organized search will catch the miscreants. The Very Latest. At six o'clock yesterday evening Tiik IlKi'iniMGAN received word that two posses had been organized and already started for the hills to make a search. The county, byCommlssIoncr Knowles, has olfered a reward of $1,00 and the Co-op has added $50. It Is deemed a rather unfavorable time to begin a search as such characters are the pnes who put up slttf fights when cornered. The feeling in Wcllsvllle is rather Intense. |
