Show Some Taffy and a Challenge. Logan, Utah, Oct. 10, l!)0.t. Eihtoii Looan KKI'UIIMUAN My Dear Sir: Press of business has prevented me heretofore from expressing express-ing to ou my Just appreciation of jour candid and truthful report of the two lrctuies delivered In Logan by Mr. Gilbert, on "Socialism." I make this acknowledgement to you for the reason that It Is rarely tho case that a partisan newspaper exhibits such Intellectual In-tellectual generosity as In this instance where a very small minority of the people have been most fairly icprcscnt-ed icprcscnt-ed by your paper, whose attitude on economic questions arc the opposite of the views of those who arc seeking what they deem to bo to the higher Interest of the social organic conditions condi-tions of today. Will jou permit me, howevcr.to call your attention to a statement contained con-tained In one of jour cdltoilalsof the same Issue and which statement, I think, Is not warranted by tho facts, to wit: "That thoio arc a bundled men In Logan who will debate the socialistic question with any aowcd ircmhcr of the Socialist party In Logan." Lo-gan." You will paidon mo If I say that this statement seems to mo to leach the limit of absurdity, Inasmuch as Itisln.dh cctconlllct with facts coming com-ing under my own observation, as thus: Myself and oilier persons of the Socialist peisuaslon hare dining t lie last two years, made stienuous efforts to discover any gentleman In Logan who could bo Induced to champion the cause of capitalism eisus the cooperative co-operative commonwealth. It N foi this icason that Tub IlicruiiMUAN Is to bo congratulated on Its discovery of a hundred such champions wheic I have, heretofore, been unable to unearth one. In common Justice, therefore, I am just Hied In tho leasonablc request that at least one of the bundled bo announced as icady to contribute his moeity of exact information on this important subject, for the economic and social betteimcnt of our fellow cltlens. As soon as wo are thus advised ad-vised wo will cndeaor to meet lilm In fair and open discussion on any or all especial features contained in the Socialist So-cialist national platform. Dear Sir, this statement is not made (and I tiustjou will believe mo to be quite sincere in making the same) with a view to piovokc useless partisan parti-san discussion, but fiom an honest desire de-sire to get at tho truth as It relates to our economic dilllculties, therefore, In In the event that we not bo able to arrange ar-range for debate or discussion (which 1 do not favor for obvious le.isons) ap-pealing ap-pealing to both you and I, wo might induce a respectable number of gentlemen gentle-men In Logan, holding different opinions opin-ions on the questions, to deliver a series of lectures, commencing at as early a date as can be arranged for and to which the general public should be Invited tlnough the local press. As an educational pioposltlon this, It seems to me, Is woi thy of the attention atten-tion and support of every good citizen and especially of the faculties of our two colleges and the stair of the New Jersey Academy, not forgetting the pulpit. With slnccic respect and esteem 1 am, Sincerely Yours, C. C. Goodwin, Socialist. |
