Show About Sidewalks. Mr. FJltor. I understand the City Council Intends passing an ordinance for putting in cement sidewalk on Center stioet, west of the Lincoln Hotel Ho-tel to the depot. It Is a question if this Is likely to N? an impiovemont or otherwise. If tho condition of some parts of the sidewalk on Hie business block dm lng the past winter are anything any-thing to go by, It would be a detriment detri-ment as lar as winter is concerned. When the snow melts and tuins to Ice on cement it makes walking not only dlftlcult but dangoioiis. Some people will say, pass an oidinance to compel the piopeity owners to keepthelrslde-walks keepthelrslde-walks clean. Can It be enforced' Ask the meichant what It costs him In time and money to keep the sidewalk In front of his slow clean and then calculate the cost on some of those lots which aie fiom 4 toll rods front. Again the cement walks would be of little use unless the city Intends to put In good stone ciossingsand pipe the ditches. There is also another matter which should be taken into consideiatlon. Hovvaie the poor people on that street going to meet the payments unless they sell all or pan of their piopeity and that probably at a sacrlllceV Why cannot can-not the city council make such ar-langemcnts ar-langemcnts that the amount could be paid In three or four Instalments, with reasonable interest added' Theie should lie no dllllculty in getting the money if the city would guarantee payment, which they would inn no llsk In doing, In-as-much as power to sell would lie in their hands. Why should thev not try and assist those who have to bear the expenses' Let them take these matteis under advisement advise-ment same as the Salt Lake City council coun-cil is doing. Yoms Respectfully, A SuiihcniiiKit. |
