Show Firmness of Egg Shell. Most people are aware of the power of egg shells to resist external pressure pres-sure on the ends, but not many would credit tho results of tests recently made. Eight ordinary hen's eggs were submitted to pressure applied externally exter-nally all over the surfaco of tho shell and the breaking pressures varied between be-tween 400 pounds and 675 pounds per square Inch. With the stresses applied Internally to twolve eggs, theso gave way at pressures varying between 82 pounds and 65 pounds per square inch. The pressure required to crush the oggs varied between 40 pounds and 75 pounds. Tho averago thickness of the shells was 13-1,000 Inch. |
