Show COLORS OF THE SKY. Scientist Explains How Glorious Sunsets Sun-sets Are Formed. Prof. T. J. J. Seo of the United States navy has observed tho color ot tho sky in various altitudes In high mountains, and In dry and moist countries, coun-tries, such as Egypt and Grecco. and Arizona nnd tho Mississippi valley. His conclusion Is that tho beautiful red colors of satinets and Bunrises so much spoken of by Greek and Roman writers, and so often Illustrated In landscapo painting, arise from water vapor in tho lower layers of our atmosphere, at-mosphere, absorbing tho blue and transmitting tho red light. According to Dr. Sec, tho reddish colors como from that part of our air within flvo miles of tho earth's surfaco, whllo tho deep blue of tho sky arises from reflections re-flections of mlnuto particles In tho higher parts of our atmosphere. Tho water vapor docs not extend very high, clouds never rising higher than ten miles abovo the earth. Tho bluo streaks cast by clouds at sunset show that tho rod arises near the earth, while the blue has its seat very high up. Abovo our ntmosphcro tho sky has all tho blackness of tho dnrkest night. |
