Show KOREAN WOMEN'S HARD WORK. Labor-Saving Machines Unknown In "Hermit Kingdom." As there are no labor-saving machines ma-chines In Korea, womon's work Is done by the, crudest and hardest methods possible, from hulling rice with a heavy v"il or stono pestle to washing clothes by beating them In the streams and ironing them with sticks. In order to Iron tho clothes must always pp ripped apart and wrapped around a wooden roller while damp; they aro thon beaten by either ono or two women. It Is surprising to see tho gloss on tho whito calico and the sheen upon tho linen produced by this method of Ironing; It surpasses the dressing ono sees In this country on newly bought linen. Since tho people peo-ple dress exclusively In white, tho woman's day and often much of the night, too Is spent In washing, Ironing Iron-ing nnd sowing. |
